Artist's Comments

another assignment for the McGill Tribune.

Band is Mute Math playing at Club Soda in Montreal.

I had never heard of them before last night, but they've apparently got a following of really dedicated fans and they were awesome performers! I had a great time!

a few notes:

I originally totally missed this shot and I wasn't even going to send it in to the Tribune, but on a double check it popped out at me and said PICK ME! and I really like it

noisy, I know. Used ISO 3200 to make sure I was safe in all the lighting situations. I haven't bothered to do a noise reduction on this yet as It's 9am and I've been up ALL night editing these (they're due today).

I might change some stuff later but here it is for now.

I like as it is
The noise adds excitement plus we can see the singer and his guitar

You don't no it's missing, until you need it.
Thank you. I'm glad you like it :D

...but I don't really understand what you mean about the noise adding excitement and letting you see the singer.

Do you know what I mean by noise? The grain, the tiny dots that are all over the image. Getting rid of them with a program like neat image would not change how much you can see the singer or anything else. It would just make it a crisper image without all of that grain :)

No that's what I meant.
The noise/pixilation adds a realistic feel, a little bit gritty, like actually being there, in the club.
the 'grit' and glare in the shot don't obscure the figure though.
In so much of band photography the performers are often unrecognizable due to the stagelight glare and the shooting conditions.

Nevermind about the noise, it looks more raw, just like the band, nice shot. The background light looks perfectly balanced with the rest of the frame.

Nicely done, love it.
thank you! this one is def my fave from that night.

:D

i don't know if it made it into the paper b/c I haven't checked the physical copy yet, but one I didn't post made it to the front page!!! [link] :D

Nice shot, the one with the whole band. The crowd looks awesome. Really, nice shots, congrats!

I used to shot concerts and you can agree with me it's freaking hard to get the photos you want!
indeed it is! but so so satisfying when you get a good one! :D

What strikes me about this one is the way the composition is made up of four seperate areas of lines all going in different directions, with the main subjec surrounded by them all. I particularly like the way the lines of light very subtly move across the heads of the crowd.
